Hyaluronic acid and sperm cell
Only fully mature sperm cell has the ability to bind to hyaluronan. On the head of that sperm cell there are special receptors – proteins – which enable it to distinguish and to bind to hyaluronic acid in the coat of the egg cell. It is really important in the process of fertilization, as it facilitates the infiltration of the sperm to the inside of the egg cell.
Indications for the HBA test
The HBA test is an additional examination to standard semen analysis, especially in case of idiopathic infertility, without a clear cause. It is recommended for men with high percentage of abnormal sperm structure and dysfunctions in the quality of sperm chromatin. The HBA test result can also help stating whether it is necessary to perform IVF pICSI procedure (physiological ICSI). In order to perform the HBA test, the sperm needs to be motile – that is why the contraindication for this test is asthenozoospermia, the lack of motile sperm cells in the semen. With the use of a microscope, a laboratory technician counts how many motile sperm cells has bound with the special medium containing hyaluronic acid.
In the assissted reproductive technologies it is possible to use special medium with hyaluronic acid and the tools allowing to select the highest quality sperm with the best ability to bind to hyaluronan. This method of IVF is called pICSI, a variation of ICSI (Intracytoplasmic sperm injection) procedure. The sperm does not lose this ability even after freezing, thawing and preparatory procedure.
